Once the audience’s attitudes change, the ethos is empty, the message inert. The literature becomes historical artifact. This critique is supported by Wright himself who saw his writing in single-minded social activist terms. In this light, Wright might be viewed as a mere sophisticated pamphleteer, as James Baldwin claims of Harriet Beecher Stowe (18). It is my contention that as readers we move further away from the attitudes of 1940 America, Wright’s work will resonate less and less with American audiences.
