In 1949, the Belasco became an NBC radio theater, returning to legitimate use on November 5, 1953, with The Solid Gold Cadillac followed by George Axelrod’s Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1955) with Jayne Mansﬁeld in a leading role. The Pulitzer Prize was awarded to the Belasco’s next hit, Tad Mosel’s All the Way Home (1960). The British invasion of the sixties came to the Belasco in the form of Inadmissible Evidence (1965) and Frank Marcus’ The Killing of Sister George (1966). Al Pacino made his Broadway debut at the Belasco in Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?
Lunt and Fontanne opened with The Taming of the Shrew (1935) costarring Bretaigne Windust, Richard Whorf, Le Roi Operti, and Sydney Greenstreet. The thirties ended with highlights including Behrman’s End of Summer (1936) and Ben Hecht’s To Quito and Back (1937).
