Rasmussen (1986a) notes, however, that the stipe of Stanhopea is several cell layers thick. 38 39 In some other orchids, a similar structure develops in a different way. In the Tropidieae, Prasophyllinae, and Bulbophyllum ecornutum, for example, an extension of the rostellum forms a connection between the pollinia and the viscidium. This is termed a "hamulus," or hamular stipe. POLARITY. Each type of stipe has evolved independently in several groups, and caudicles are usually a prerequisite for the evolution of stipes (not in the Bulbophyllinae).

Rather than evolving a single median viscidium, this group evolved two distinct viscidia, one attached to each of the pollinia, with the rostellar extension between them. Some Orchideae have a single viscidium, but even these usually have the rostellar extension above the viscidium, thus suggesting that the single viscidium is secondary in this group. In Orchis and Dactylorhiza each viscidium is covered by a sheath, or bursicle, that is easily broken when touched, thus exposing the fresh, sticky viscidium.

Sensitive Rostellum In Listera, the rostellum includes a sack, or pocket, of glue under pressure. When a pollinator touches the rostellum this sack breaks open, squirting out fresh glue onto the intruder. At the same time, the margins of the rostellum reflex, releasing the pollinia to fall onto the fresh glue droplet (Ackerman and Mesler 1979; Schick et al. 1987). The sensitive rostellum of Listera may have evolved from a membrane-covered rostellum like that of Epipactis (Dressler 1990a). Accessory Structures More than the pollen mass, itself, is involved in the transfer of pollinia from one flower to another.
