This is the phrase used to designate the supposed causal connection between some event that shocks or frightens a pregnant woman and a defect in her later-born baby. A typical case—a published one—is that of a pregnant woman who happened to see on the street a man with partly amputated feet. She became distressed and began to fear that her baby would be born with similar defects.
Daw Aye Myint was another subject of Burma, who said that she remembered the previous life of a man who had been struck over the head with a heavy sword or chopping knife. Hers was thus a case of the sex-change type.
