At McGregor a distinction was made between school assembly and House assembly. School assembly involved two House groups on one day each week and was taken by either the Headmaster, Deputy Head or Senior Mistress, while House assembly was with one House alone, was taken by the Head of House and was held on three days each week. In observing a school assembly the researcher can pose a number of questions. Do the pupils stand or sit? Are they assembled in particular groups? Are all the pupils present?
In addition, she could also provide the responses that had been made by some of the teachers. One day when the Headmaster was out of the school, she remarked, ‘I bet you’d like to read some of the notes that the staff write to him [the Head] about all this’. I indicated that I had seen some notes from teachers to the Head as they were located in various files in her office.
