Although one of the best ways of assessing a student’s potential for doctoral study is the formal interview, this is often problematic for an international student. Sometimes there are instances where the student is already studying in the UK, or the student might visit the UK at the same time as making the application, so they can meet prospective supervisors. In both cases, there is the opportunity to invite them to attend for a formal interview. However, this is not a common occurrence, and the student might be based thousands of miles away.

A more common possibility is that a telephone interview might be arranged, which could involve more than one academic. However, this can be problematic regarding time differences and quality of the telephone connection. Furthermore, how do you know whether you really are talking to the applicant? Another more recent opportunity is the videoconference interview, and although this can be expensive, is not available everywhere and is not an ideal format for interviewing, it has the advantage that you will know who has been interviewed, and as interviews are recorded, others can see the interview, even if they could not be there at the designated time.

Once the admissions tutor has made a final decision, taking all the above into account, if the decision is negative, it is advisable that the Admissions Office write to the student, explaining why he or she will not be offered a place. If a student with a disability is offered a place to study, he or she may be eligible to receive a Disabled Student’s Allowance from their local funding body, such as a local education authority. This allowance is intended to pay for additional support required for study.
