The behavior of the T3E may be attributed to the stream buffers, but does not hold for even larger grid sizes as can be seen from the results given in the last section: the superlinear speedup for 4 PEs (see Table 1) is possible only due to the relative performance per PE being better for a problem size of 2722 than of 5442 grid points.

There are several possibilities to define the reaction intensity, e. g. the local heat release rate NS q˙ = α=1 Yα ω˙ α hα (9) can be used for this purpose. The temporal evolution of the total heat release rate, which is obtained by integrating q˙ over the computational domain, is shown in Fig. 5 for both turbulent flame kernels as well as for the corresponding laminar flames. The increase of total heat release is related to flame surface growth which is enhanced by the wrinkling of the flame front by the turbulence.

The accuracy of a least-squares spectral element discretization of the Stokes problem (cast in velocity-vorticity-pressure form) has been reported in [5, 6] for different boundary conditions. The present paper deals with the efficient parallelization of this solver.
