To be honest, I often felt deep inside that my sister was my “mother” because she was always there for me. She was my voice and my 32 Adams and Rohring ears, and I depended on her. Our family had a different family structure. We had different relationships and roles within my family compared with those developed by other families. When we were sitting at the table and passing the bowls of food, everyone was talking to each other. I was not able to understand everyone by lipreading at the same time.

I felt that I was a different person, an outcast in my own family. I often thought that other people saw me as a limited, handicapped child. Because of the problems finding people with whom to communicate, individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing are at risk for loneliness (Pollard, 1998). Some, or people who have hearing parents, may experience more unhappiness because of the difficulty they have in communicating with their parents (Adams, 1997). My self-esteem was very low. At every stage of my growth, I was never challenged to solve problems and my family always tried to protect me out of concern for my welfare.

AGE OF ONSET OF HEARING LOSS The age of onset of hearing loss is important as a base for acquiring and using spoken language. Individuals who experience a hearing loss before they acquire speech and spoken language, typically before the age of 3, are considered to have prelingual hearing loss. For example, Pamela Rohring, who cowrote this book, was diagnosed with her hearing loss before language development, at the age of 2. She has a prelingual hearing loss. On the other hand, Rush Limbaugh, who was recently diagnosed, has a postlingual hearing loss.
