J. Mioduski We have attempted to use isomorphic ethyl sulfates of lanthanides to study the coordination number of lanthanide aquoions on the basis of the double-double effect. This idea arose immediately after we realized that the data of Staveley and coworkers show the double-double effect in the enthalpy of complexation after elimination of the enthalpies of hydration 84~. It was assumed that the coordination number of lanthanides aquoions can be determined from the thermodynamic quantities of the solubility of the isomorphic ethyl sulfates [Ln(H20)9](C2HsSO4)3 because in these compounds the lanthanide ions are surrounded in the crystal lattice by 9 water molecules in the known arrangement: face-centered trigonal prism (Helmholz structure93)), symmetry point group D3h.
