OPTIONS With your raised bed in place, there are a number of different types of row covers that can easily be added to help extend your growing season or to keep animals and insects off your crops. Figure 1-5 shows these various row cover designs you can build over a raised bed: (A) spun fleece cover over hoops made from plastic water pipes (B) glass cloche using recycled pieces of glass (C) cold frame using storm windows If you decide to build a cold frame, make the corner posts as long as your cold frame is high at the back and front.
GLASS CLOCHE Another option for covering the raised bed is to use panes of glass leaned together to form a triangle with the bed and held together at the top by a specially made wooden clip. I use 30″ × 18″ panes of glass placed horizontally with the bottoms placed about 24″ apart. The tops are held together to form a triangle with a specially cut wooden block (see Figure 1-5). ) I find that two blocks are needed to hold 30″-long glass panels. I also have two 66″-long panels that are held with three clips, but these take two people to position them properly.
This gives a seat height of 16″. Use two screws to hold each seat support to the legs and then drill and bolt the seat supports to each leg using the four 3/8″ bolts. Figure 11-3 Figure 11-4 STEP Install the 2″ × 4″ longitudinal braces to increase the rigidity of the legs. These are 24″ long with a 45-degree angle on each end. They are screwed to the underside of the table and the seat support. Figure 11-4 shows the center brace from the table end. Figure 11-5 STEP Turn the table upright and screw the seats into place.
