Fred Bigman, a full-blood Apache, was born in 1900 to very traditional parents. Fred was a fluent Apache speaker, one of relatively few left, and well-informed on the old ways of life. He attended government and public schools for, in his estimation, a total of about six years. He married Annie Somti, a Kiowa, who knew a lot about Apache medicines, knowledge she had acquired from Fred’s mother.
