Assis and Henry A. Colorado Abstract The ﬁque ﬁber is an important natural ﬁber, originally from Colombia where it is used for sacks and crafts while its plant is used to contain slopes. However, few studies were realized with the ﬁber obtained from the ﬁque plant leaf, its mechanical properties are superior in many aspects in comparison to some other lignocellulosic ﬁbers. This work investigated the toughness behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of a fabric made of ﬁque ﬁber by means of Charpy impact tests.
The use of natural ﬁbers as reinforcement materials to polymeric matrix is of interest of various industries. They are used in automobile parts building, jackets, coatings and furniture, for example . In order to ﬁnd new possibilities to this research ﬁeld, the Eucalyptus ﬁber have been recently studied as an alternative of reinforcement material. This ﬁber is extracted from the bark of Eucalyptus citriodora plant, which is extensively cultivated in Brazil. The objective of this work is to investigate the tensile behavior of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with continuous and aligned Eucalyptus ﬁbers.
