A very special First World War publication

Drawing on rare and unseen illustrations and photographs, The Illustrated First World War offers a fresh perspective of the conflict combined with insightful articles by historians Lucinda Gosling and Ruth Sheppard.
After the outbreak of war in August 1914, Britain’s daily newspapers provided densely packed columns of up-to-the-minute news.
The weekly illustrated papers of the day, however, could offer a more considerate approach to the week’s events, adding expert commentary, detailed illustrations, cartoons and photography.
The first and best-known illustrated newspaper was The Illustrated London News. At the outbreak of war, the magazine and its main rivals, The Sphere and The Graphic, mobilised their journalists and special artists to focus on the unfolding events of the war. In addition, the ILN launched a new paper, The Illustrated War News, which ran until paper shortages forced its closure in 1918.

Each of these illustrated papers had a sibling title focusing on the lighter side of life: celebrity gossip, culture, and travel.
The ILN had The SketchandThe Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News; The Sphere had The Tatler, and The Graphic had The Bystander. The Tatler even claimed to be “the best paper to relieve the strain of war excitement”. Yet these papers also provided poignant coverage. Each issue of the The IIlustrated Sporting and Dramatic News brought home the reality of war with pages of photographs of prominent sportsmen who had enlisted, and then, inevitably, were featured in the rolls of honour of those who had fallen.A decade after the end of the war, these publications were all brought together under the umbrella of Illustrated Newspapers Ltd, and were then known as the “Great Eight”.

As the custodians of these amazing archives, ILN has drawn on this unique material to produce this very special First World War publication.
Price £6.99 (ex P&P), with £1.40 of every issue sold donated to the Royal British Legion
