Searching the Archives
Users can search the entire First World War archives of The Illustrated London News and the “Great Eight” magazines collection using the “Search” bar. But please bear in mind that, 100 years after the outbreak of the war, language and terms have changed so your search result may sometimes return “nothing found”.
For instance, “post traumatic stress disorder” was not used until the 1980s. Instead you may want to search for “shell shock”. The word “propaganda” was not used by the British to describe their own communications and you will not find it in these archives. You may want to consider searching for “recruitment” or “Kitchener” instead. Place names have also changed, so, for example, don’t search for “Istanbul” but “Constantinople”.
Please consider what words and terms would have been used in 1914 rather than those used today.
Curated Content
