Knud Rasmussen Here in the Dominican Republic, the best book currently out is The Birds of the West Indies, by Herbert Raffaelle et. al., Princeton Press (Full hard-covered version, published in 1998; second compact edition in 2002 - also published in the UK, Helm Field Guides). This is an important first step to identifying the bird. After searching for the perfect birding field guide you are sure to discover that it does not exist. Non-Handled Hunts: Peaceable Hill also offers hunters with their own dog the opportunity to participate in a traditional hunting experience.

Silhouette - Shape and Size: After birding for a few months one should be able to categorize most birds into families using silhouette. Morcombe's has (in my opinion) bad pictures with poor colour renditions and too much 'cluttered' information. Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) 4 on snags at edge of river, SCR. Richard Garrigues also has some valuable information about finding birds in Costa Rica which I link here. In the meantime, we have asked two specialist groups to select their favourite guides which they can recommend to others. I have even created a version that runs on a Pocket PC and a cell phone, but I have not pursued either of these commercially. Beginners also might be wise to choose a "regional" guide rather than one with all the birds of North America included.

This guide to bird songs covers over 370 species and comes in cassette and compact disc versions, both retailed at the same price. The rest of the chicks were hiding under the rock. One of my favorite features is a very handy quick find reference of all of the birds at the beginning of the book. Instead, this poster illustrates about 100 of the bird species most commonly seen in western backyards and serves as an excellent quick guide for our region. Some species with numerous variations are covered in more depth with even more illustrations and at the start of each family of birds there is a detailed overview of the family and all the species represented in the guide for that family.
